What is LTL shipping?
LTL, or Less Than Truckload, are typically shipments that do not require the full 48-53 foot trailers. N-Motion Freight specializes in this type service, along with FTL (Full Truck Load). We can supply additional services such as lift gates, residential pickups/drop-offs and guaranteed services.
Our LTL carriers use a wide array of trailers – from flatbeds to dry vans (enclosed trailers.) Need refrigerated service? We use a temperature controlled trailer for such loads. On the dry van trailers, roll up doors are utilized for rear access to the inside of the trailer. Another trailer type might utilize swing doors for larger sized commodities. Our drivers in the city are using local day cab trucks because they aren’t making the long runs and don’t need to sleep in the trucks. These shorter cabs increase maneuverability and are at an overall lower weight. Drivers in the inner city typically carry pallet jacks on the trailers so that they can adjust the cargo throughout their route.
Common carry rates are determined by class, weight, pickup/drop-off destinations, and any other additional services rendered to meet the client’s needs. Discounts are offered to clients needing to move multiple units of cargo.
Fuel surcharges are the costs of fuel associated with the specific lanes of the shipment and are typically added to the top of the base rate. Being that fuel prices fluctuate weekly and are based off of the national average of diesel, fuel surcharges will fluctuate as well. The latest trend has been an increase in Less Than Truckload because the cost of shipping is lower with the smaller amount of commodities. Customers used to fill trucks and get that initial discount for the FTL. Now, customers are getting more Less Than Truckload and splitting the cost with each other to fill up a truck.
N-Motion Freight defines volume shipments are over 4,000lbs and/or 12 ft of deck space. Back-haul is a term used in the shipping industry to define a truck that has made his delivery and needs a partial load to fill his trailer on the way back home. Typically, these back-haul loads are at a discounted rate because it makes more sense to the driver to make something rather than nothing.
